Thank you for the opportunity to judge your 2020 Art Show.
This year was obviously different with the Covid-19 lockdown in place, and presented some unusual challenges for the artists and the art department. Luckily from my end, Susie Monzingo made it as seamless as it could be. Many thanks to her.
While the digital age has its miracles, it is disappointing to not be able to view your art in person. Art was created by hand, and I believe best viewed in person. My choices may have been different had I been able to see and compare side by side, the size of each piece, the thickness of brush strokes, the subtle things a camera can’t convey.
Hopefully this will be a one-time inconvenience and we can get back to the new normal soon.
I based my judging on many elements but design and composition are almost always at the top of the list. Technique and skillful execution are very important but a good composition is the basis for everything.
Art Competitions can be fun (especially for the winners) but remember the awards are the opinion of one person at one point in time, a different person or even different circumstances would yield a different set of winners. So if you won congratulations, if you didn’t just keep painting, keep learning and enjoy the creating of art.
Thank you again for the opportunity it was a difficult but rewarding process.
